About the role
Bill pay is six engineers and a product surface that a finance team touches every single working day. A bill arrives as a PDF in a mailbox, gets read, routes to whoever is allowed to approve it at that amount, and joins a payment run — and every one of those four steps is somebody's afternoon if it goes wrong.
You would manage the team and own the roadmap with the product designer beside you. We expect a manager here to keep reading code and reviewing designs; what we do not expect is that you write the team's features yourself.
What you'll do
- Run six engineers: one-to-ones, growth, hiring, and the honest conversation when it is needed.
- Own the bill pay roadmap with product and design, and defend the quarter it implies.
- Keep the approval engine and the document pipeline correct as more thresholds and entities land on them.
- Set the on-call rotation and make sure the review after an incident changes something.
- Represent bill pay to support and implementation, who hear about it first.
What you'll bring
- Two or more years managing engineers, and several before that writing production code.
- A record of shipping a roadmap without spending the team to do it.
- The judgement to know which correctness argument is worth a week and which is worth an hour.
- Comfort giving direct feedback early, in a small company where everyone will hear the result.
- Enough written English to put a decision, and its rejected alternative, in front of the whole company.
Nice to have
- Have run a team that owned money movement, approvals or documents.
- Hired into a European market with published salary bands.
- Kotlin or Go — bill pay is Kotlin, but the team's language is not what we are hiring for.
How we hire
Four steps, and a decision either way.
The same four for every role.No take-home that eats a weekend, and no round that exists to see whether you will put up with another round.
